There two main ways that the search engines can deliver new clients to your business:

  1. Natural listings - these appear on the left side of the search results and your site's position here is determined by the search engine. Although getting high positions in the natural listings is generally regarded as being too difficult for non-specialists, most of our clients are trained to do this themselves, many with fantastic results.
    There are three keys to success here:
    • As in all marketing, being clear about what you are aiming for is paramount: no web page can be all things to all people so create more pages each one being focussed on a single topic
    • Remember that the search engines are trying to give the best possible results to their users - so writing clear, useful and relevant text is the foundation of success
    • There are some 'technical' requirements to ensure that the search engines see your pages in the best possible
  2. Sponsored links or Pay-Per-Click (PPC) - these appear mainly on the right of the search results (although sometimes at the very top of the results above the Natural listings). Although only 20% of search engine users click on these links, when people are in 'buy mode' they are used more often.
    Although getting a high position in PPC is mainly a function of how much you are prepared to spend compared to everyone else who wants to be top for your particular keyphrases, there are ways of maximising your PPC budget:
    • Choice of keyphrase can not only affect your costs, it can also have a big impact on the cost per lead: some phrases will generate a greater percentage of leads per 'click' than others
    • Optimising both your PPC advertisement and the page it links to will have an effect on your costs.

The 'natural' Search Engine Optimisation process

  • Keyword research - choosing the best keyphrases for your business (the phrases your potential clients type into Google when they are looking for your company's products or services) is the starting point of any Search Engine marketing programme. All our websites are built with a system that does a lot of this work for you and makes the rest of the task easily achievable by anyone with a basic knowledge of PC.
  • Link recruitment - If the above two steps do not take you to the to of the search engine rankings, then you will need to undertake a programme of recruiting links to your website. We offer all our clients a FREE link from our site with our Directory of Clients and in some cases, this will sufficient to gain the ranking you require. Pay Per Click (PPC)

Although anyone can set up a PPC account with the search engines very quickly, achieving the best results with PPC involves a very similar process to Natural SEO so it is usually best to start with natural optimisation and then build your PPC around that.
