Helping ensure your success online

Optimising a site for search engines is the accumulation of many actions that build up to get results.

Search Engine Optimization

Natural search engine optimisation includes all of the actions you take on your web site through on-page optimisation, off-page optimisation and keyword optimisation. These actions raise your chances of being high on the left side of a Google search results page.

the internet marketing company offers a free search engine optimization report.  In it we complete a 14 point review of your website.

Here is some explanation of the features we review on your site.

Web address relevance: Having keywords in your url can help with optimization.  An address such as www.smith.com is not as useful as www.smith-plumbing-cambridge.com as it includes more descriptive key words.

TITLE: This text appears in the top of your browser window and as the top line of the Google search results. It is very important in SEO as well as helping encourage people to click on your link in the Google results page. It should include your most important keyphrases.

Meta tags: KEYWORDS/DESCRIPTION: This is information that is behind the scenes that Google sees and uses in the search results list.  We always suggest for our clients to have a call to action in the DESCRIPTION.

Google’s view of your top keyword: This is the result of Google’s analysis of your site and the top keyword that they associate with the content found on your site.  This should match to the business you are in otherwise, Google will be sending the wrong visitors to your site.

Date last modified: Updating your site regularly and having updated copyright notices are good methods of keeping your site relevant and are seen positively by search engines.

Google rank: Google has a ranking system for all pages on the web.  It uses a 1-10 range with 10 being the highest.

Favicon: This is a small icon at the top of the window near the url (web page address).  Google’s favicon is a G with multicolors.  BBC uses a miniature version of their block logo. This is one more item that Google uses to rank sites.

Site map: Google looks for a site map of your site to know how many pages are on it.  If it doesn’t find one, it might not find your entire site and only think it is one page.

Search friendly URLS: It is useful to have keywords in the url (web page addresses).  Some pages are computer generated (www.smith.com/pg1 ) while others will include keyphrases (www.smith.com/plumbing-specialist/broken-pipes).

Indexed pages on Google: This is the number of pages from your website that Google has in its index.  Sometimes this number will be higher than the actual number of pages - this may sometimes be due to a problem with the way your website has been set up and may cause issues with your site's SEO.

Inbound links: Search engines put a high value on inbound links (other sites that have links into your site).  Many companies try to trade links with partners so each gets a benefit.

Keyword volume/competition: Using the top keyword from your homepage, we searched for the monthly volume of searches on that term and the number of competitive pages using that term.  Ideally, the keyword (or keyphrase) would have a high volume and a low competitiveness (less than 10 in an ideal situation).

Company name on 1st page of Google: When your company name is searched in Google, it should be listed on the first page of results.  Your company name is usually an easier task than for a product name or product category.
